Ahead of Washington’s 2025 legislative session, two school security bills have been introduced. The bills are designed to address growing concerns about safety in schools, particularly in the wake of national debates on gun violence and school security measures.

  1. First Bill / SB 5003: This proposal focuses on enhancing school security by funding safety improvements and increasing the presence of law enforcement officers in schools. It also includes measures to train school staff and provide resources for addressing mental health issues that may affect student behavior and safety.
  2. Second Bill / SB 5004: This bill aims to expand safety programs for students and faculty, with a particular focus on creating secure environments that prevent threats, both from inside and outside the school. The bill also seeks to improve the coordination between schools and local law enforcement agencies to ensure quicker responses during emergencies.

These bills reflect growing concerns from parents, school administrators, and lawmakers about the need for stronger protective measures as incidents of violence in schools continue to raise alarms across the country. Both bills are expected to undergo discussions and adjustments before being formally introduced for voting in 2025.

If these bills are passed, the School Safety and Wellness team will be sure to support our regional districts and law enforcement agencies in future implementation of identified measures.
