The SSWC is proud to announce two separate professional development events available for our regional educators and partners in school safety:
The first is: That Which We Do Not Know – Autism and School Threat Assessment
Dr. Stephanie Leite, a psychologist specializing in threat assessment and behavior management, has encountered a disproportionate number of referrals involving individuals who are socially different from their peers, have been diagnosed with autism, or exhibit behaviors that make others uneasy.
In this session, Dr. Leite will provide an overview of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and its relationship to crime, carefully distinguish between ASD and psychopathic behavior, and use research to identify factors that contribute to varying levels of risk. Participants will also analyze case studies to apply their learning.
The second event is: The 13 Millisecond Problem; Neurodivergent Brain-Based Reasons for Challenging Behaviors & Tips to Address It to Increase School Safety.
Hannah Smith is a licensed trauma therapist, certified interpersonal neurobiologist, and holder of a degree in special education. In the first half of this event, Hannah dives into the two paths to reactivity in the brain (frustration/anger/anxiety). Attendees will learn how to quickly assess whether a behavioral threat exists, and learn methods to more effectively address the student’s reactions.
The second part of the course explores the symptoms and behaviors associated with ADHD, and will address how to differentiate between ADHD-related behavior and signs of more serious issues, such as a potential threat or pathway to violence.
We hope you will join us for these important conversations!
