On Thursday, November 20, leaders in youth empowerment and violence prevention came together to learn more about the transformative potential of the Athletes As Leaders (AAL) mentor program. The session featured Elise Morris—Executive Director of CHAMP The Culture, Director of Community Outreach and Expansion for TeamUp Washington, and a professional athlete—alongside Ward Urion, Senior Prevention Strategist with the Washington State Coalition Against Domestic Violence (WSCADV).

Elise shared a powerful personal perspective, reflecting on her journey as both a former AAL mentee and now a professional athlete and mentor. She emphasized how athletic environments offer a unique and influential space to talk with young people about healthy relationships, body image, positive decision-making, and personal boundaries. She encouraged attendees to consider the meaningful impact they can have on the youth they support every day.

Ward provided additional insight into the purpose and reach of the Athletes As Leaders program, which equips mentors to foster leadership, confidence, and emotional well-being among middle and high school athletes.

For anyone who missed the live introduction, a recording of the full Zoom session is available—running about an hour and filled with valuable takeaways. An overview of the training sessions (December 2nd and 4th) and a Q&A begins around the 32-minute mark.
