With school back in full swing, October can be a busy time for supporting students who are experiencing dysregulation and exhibiting challenging behaviors. When a student’s behavior raises concerns about the safety of others, school staff need a clear, structured process to assess the situation and determine appropriate next steps.

The NWESD 189 School Safety & Wellness Center (SSWC) is offering several upcoming training sessions on the Salem-Keizer Cascade student threat assessment model. These sessions are ideal for new staff or team members who would benefit from a refresher on the model and its protocols.

Important update: Transition to the SK Cascade model

Washington state is transitioning from the original Salem-Keizer Cascade model to the updated SK Cascade model. While the two models share the same theoretical foundations and core threat assessment approach, the updated model includes revised protocol forms and procedures.

These upcoming trainings (on Oct 19 and 23) will cover the original Salem-Keizer Cascade model, which remains familiar to most districts in the NWESD region.

Once districts have signed the SK Cascade sublicense agreements, the SSWC will be ready to provide training on the updated model’s forms and procedures. Districts interested in scheduling SK Cascade training are encouraged to contact our team.
