When a crisis affects a school community, the immediate response is only the beginning. Supporting students, staff, and families through the psychological impact of a traumatic event takes preparation, coordinated intervention, and a plan for recovery.

The NWESD School Safety & Wellness Center (SSWC) is offering PREPaRE Workshop 2: Mental Health Crisis Interventions, a nationally recognized training developed by the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP).

This two-day virtual training equips school-based professionals with practical knowledge and skills to provide immediate mental health crisis interventions following an acute traumatic event. Participants will explore psychological first aid, assessing psychological trauma, responding to the mental health needs of individuals and groups, and connecting immediate crisis intervention with longer-term, trauma-informed mental health supports.

Who Should Attend?

PREPaRE Workshop 2 is designed for school professionals who serve as crisis intervention specialists, including school psychologists, counselors, social workers, nurses, administrators, and other members of school crisis response teams. Community-based mental health professionals who partner with schools may also benefit from this training.

Participants should plan to complete approximately 15 minutes of pre-work, including a pre-test, before the training.

Workshop 2 is part of NASP’s PREPaRE model for school crisis prevention and intervention. Although Workshop 1 is recommended, it is not a prerequisite for Workshop 2. Completing both workshops provides a more comprehensive understanding of the model.

Whether your school is strengthening its crisis response procedures or building staff capacity to support recovery after a traumatic event, PREPaRE Workshop 2 offers practical strategies to help your school community move forward with care and confidence.
