Build the Skills Your School Community Needs Before, During, and After a Crisis
When a crisis affects a school community, preparation matters – but so does knowing what to do in the moments that follow.
The NWESD School Safety & Wellness Center (SSWC) is offering two nationally recognized PREPaRE workshops (by the National Association of School Psychologists, NASP) designed to strengthen school professionals’ ability to prepare for, respond to, and recover from school crises. Participants can register for either virtual workshop individually or attend both to build a more comprehensive understanding of school crisis response (details below).
PREPaRE Workshop 1: Comprehensive School Safety
Workshop 1 focuses on the systems, structures, and collaborative practices schools need to effectively prepare for and respond to emergencies. Participants explore comprehensive school safety planning, crisis preparedness, prevention, response, and recovery, with an emphasis on developing coordinated and effective school crisis teams.
This training is designed to help school professionals move beyond having a plan on paper to understanding how to put that plan into practice when it matters most.
PREPaRE Workshop 2: Mental Health Crisis Interventions
Workshop 2 focuses on the human side of crisis response—helping students, staff, and school community members who have experienced an acute traumatic event.
Participants develop practical skills for evaluating psychological trauma, recognizing common crisis reactions, providing psychological first aid and other crisis interventions, and matching the level of support to individual needs. The workshop also addresses crisis recovery and caring for the caregiver, recognizing that supporting the adults who respond is an essential part of sustaining a healthy school community.
The Support Doesn’t Stop When the Training Ends
Training is an important first step, but building a confident, effective crisis response system takes time and practice.
For districts ready to develop or strengthen their own Comprehensive Crisis Response Team, the SSWC can come alongside your team to help build the structure, clarify roles and responsibilities, develop response protocols, and strengthen confidence in crisis response work.
Our goal is not simply to provide training and send you on your way. We aim to help districts translate training into practice and build sustainable crisis response capacity within their own school communities.

Each workshop is provided virtually. Participation in both workshops is not mandatory, but participants are strongly encouraged to complete both workshops to develop a comprehensive understanding of the PREPaRE model and its application.
